The Muse: December 2016 : The Gift of Gratitude

The Muse

How did this happen? Another year gone! Poof. Done. Closing the books.

But it's not gone—we still have a few brilliant (and crazy-packed) weeks, my favorite holiday of the year, and... we have another year of memories. Coffees with friends. Dinners and movie dates. Roadtrips. Celebrations of birthdays, anniversaries, achievements. Snuggles with the little ones. And sure, there are all the not-so-snuggly memories, but that's how life is. We get it all at once, and it's up to us how we feel about it.

You might disagree with me on that, vehemently. I myself would have disagreed, furiously, just a few years ago. But experience—and plenty of experiments!—have shown me that no, in fact, you really can choose how to respond to something... or someone. Certainly in more cases than you'd think possible.

And that response, that attitude or approach, creates a sentiment, an emotion. We're taught to fear and expect bad things because it's a good survival strategy. Has been for thousands of years... lots of pirates & predators out there. But today we have social networks, infrastructure, support systems. No king of the Medieval Era lived half as well (or as long...) as so many of us do today. We have a lot to be grateful for.

So if you decide not to take something personally, or to let something go instead of stewing about it, you free yourself to feel that joy about the world that we tend to forget, or think we don't deserve. Try it, just as an exercise. So much of what we carry inside, and what colors our perception of the world, is created by us, our inner dialogue.

One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is the freedom to be happy. Just because.

Just a few days left to get your holiday shopping done! If you're looking for something unique, yummy, and unforgettable, we've got two gift sets for you:

The Book-to-Bar gift bundle that has been so popular at the events we've done, and...

...a new pairing I call "Cookbook & Bar." Called The Sacred Cookbook, this is a 129-page collection of 60 healing recipes from old-world cultures, from Mesoamerica and the North Africa to old Scandinavia and the Far East. Including a recipe for Mayan hot chocolate, of course. It's published by our friends at The Sacred Science.

And it comes with... you guessed it. Chocolate! A three-pack of single-origin chocolate from some of the best craft chocolate makers in the U.S. Askinosie. Harper Macaw. Firefly.

Both gift sets come with free stuff, too... free ebooks and fun downloads. Check it all out here! Scroll down the page for all the details.

Both bundles donate 11% of net proceeds to our friends at Bio Itzà in Guatemala, a non profit organization that runs a forest garden and nature reserve. Big, big thank-you to everyone who's already ordered a bundle... you're making it possible for Bio Itzà to help preserve the natural ecosystems where so many of our food and medicinal plants come from. 114 of them to be exact, on an expanse of 3,600 hectares that Bio Itzà manages.

But please hurry because we really have just a few more days left. If you order by December 18, we'll get the bundles to your loved ones' doors by the 24th (US only).

And if you do have lots of memories you've managed to capture in images, that you'd like to keep front and center instead of a shoebox in the garage, here's an idea for you.

A little company I know, right here in Sunnyvale, does photo books. But not just any photo books... their app helps collect your photos in one place and lays them out for you in a beautiful lay-flat book. And you get the first book free.

They're called Nowvel and people (especially busy moms) are raving about them. I signed up too. They've made me sit up and make a New Year's resolution to finally make all those photo albums I keep collecting images for.

Check them out here. And tell them I sent you!

Happy Holidays everyone. Have a blessed holiday and a brilliant New Year.
