It is said Malta's extremely straight, narrow streets were designed as a sort of telescope to enable the sighting of enemy ships appearing far on the distant horizon. I think I'd still need binoculars, but a dashing young Maltese seaman of centuries past surely had no trouble spotting the telltale shimmer of a sail where the sky meets the sea.
