It's done. The novel frothing with the rich history of cacao, this book that I began in late July of last year and have been fermenting, washing, drying, grinding, winnowing, conching, mixing, and stirring, is now sitting on my publisher's patient stove, bubbling beneath the editor's hand.
Want some?
Soon, soon! I beg a few more wisps of your patience; it's done but not quite yet ready to send you into those promised chocolate ecstasies, of which there shall be... plenty.
(Boring real-world translation: I'll let you know as soon as we have a release date!)
The day I sent the manuscript in—nay, the moment I hit "send" on that email, I lost all sense of direction. That's what happens when you finish a book: you get off a train that has soaked through your conscious and unconscious mind, body, and soul, day in, day out, a train that never leaves you, not even when you do need to close that laptop and make dinner or pick up your child from school or whatever.
You see, it's not the train that stops. It's you who has to get off. I'll get back on again when the publisher sends me their edits and "what were you thinking here, we can't market that!" notes in the margins, but for now, all I know is that I've stepped on a milestone and I could feel it crack like a cooled dark chocolate bar.
Speaking of milestones...

A lot is going on behind the scenes now that's going to start seeing the light of public day soon. Many a milestone are groaning now because they're all being stepped on:
• The novel about the history of chocolate is in the publisher's hands. Hopefully it won't melt.
• The first series of "Living in Sacred Time" podcasts is complete and FREE to listen through Valentine's Day only. After that we'd like your Starbucks money.
• My latest post on The Write Practice is about real romance. What's "real romance"? Why, read the post to find out!
• I just finished a rather extensive technical user manual for a scientific marine instrument company here in Silicon Valley. What! Blasphemy! Including technical writing in a literary author's newsletter. The nerve.
• Photos are up! The lovely and very talented Julie Yoo accompanied me to the Saratoga Library author's event and took both video and still shots. The video is still winding its way through my computer but the photos were simple enough to put up.
I know, I know, I'm the world's last person to put up a YouTube Channel. Anyway. Enjoy! And come to my events next time!

Q&A SESSION WITH A WRITERS' GROUP
This event took place on January 25. I spoke via Skype with a writers' group in South Carolina. What a lovely and attentive group of people. It was such a rewarding experience I'm going to blissfully assume all writers' groups are like this.
AUTHOR SERIES IN SARATOGA
This was just last week at the beautiful Saratoga Public Library, Saratoga, California. A rock-solidly organized event, with a Q&A that just wouldn't let up (an author's dream). Check out the photos of the event.
Other libraries of Silicon Valley, the white glove of author events has been thrown at your feet!
Even if you don't go to an author's event, if you're local you should check out this library. It's nestled in a little grove, and it's close enough you can get to it from just about anywhere in the peninsula.
I need to mention the photographer. Really, if you want to have very nice portraits done, call Julie Yoo. She knows how to make that camera sing. Er, make you sing for the camera. Check out Julie's web site.
